Why DRLs Are a Safety Feature

Daytime running lights (DRLs) give many vehicles a recognizable appearance, but their purpose goes well beyond styling. They help other road users notice a vehicle during daylight, when having a clear view of the road does not necessarily mean every vehicle stands out.

That safety function is supported by crash research and vehicle lighting requirements. Understanding the benefits of daytime running lights starts with three questions: how do they improve visibility, what do accident studies actually show, and how should they work alongside the vehicle's other lights?

What Are Daytime Running Lights?

Daytime running lights are front-facing vehicle lights intended to improve daytime conspicuity: how readily other people can notice the vehicle. They generally activate automatically when the vehicle is started or ready to move, subject to the vehicle's control logic.

Their main role is to make the vehicle visible to others. Headlights also provide the road illumination a driver needs in darkness. Although these functions may share a lamp housing, they serve different purposes and can operate at different intensities.

Why a Vehicle Can Be Hard to Notice in Daylight

Good daylight does not produce equally good visibility in every direction. A driver may be looking toward a bright sky while an approaching vehicle sits against trees, buildings or a shaded section of road.

Think of a car approaching a junction beneath roadside trees. Its bodywork may offer relatively little contrast against the background. Illuminated front lamps add a visual cue that can help draw attention to its presence.

This illustrates the visibility principle behind DRLs. They can help an approaching vehicle stand out to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists who can see its front. They do not guarantee detection, remove blind spots or provide the same benefit from every viewing angle.

Automatic operation also makes that daytime visibility feature available without requiring the driver to remember to switch it on for each journey.

Do Daytime Running Lights Reduce Accidents?

Research supports a safety benefit in some crash categories, but there is no single percentage that applies to every vehicle, road environment and accident type. Two studies show why the details matter.

An Australian Study Found an 8.8% Reduction in a Defined Crash Category

A 2023 study by Monash University researchers analyzed police-reported casualty crashes from 2010 to 2017. It estimated a statistically significant 8.8% reduction in the risk of non-nighttime multi-vehicle crashes where vehicle visibility could be a contributing factor for vehicles fitted with DRLs.

The estimated reductions were greater at dawn or dusk and in higher-speed zones. These findings support the value of DRLs, but the 8.8% figure should not be presented as a reduction in all accidents, nighttime crashes or fatalities.

A U.S. Study Found a More Limited Benefit

A 2008 NHTSA evaluation found a statistically significant 5.7% reduction in light trucks' and vans' involvement in the target two-vehicle crashes. That category excluded rear-end crashes.

However, the study did not find a statistically significant overall effect across the three target crash categories it examined. The 5.7% result therefore cannot be applied to every passenger vehicle or every collision.

Together, these studies support a measured message: DRLs can reduce certain visibility-related crash risks, while the size of the benefit varies. They are one part of vehicle safety alongside attentive driving, appropriate speed and safe following distances.

When Did the EU Require Daytime Running Lights?

The European Union introduced its DRL requirements in stages under the historical type-approval framework established by Directive 2008/89/EC:

  • 7 February 2011: the requirements applied to new vehicle types in categories M1 and N1, covering passenger cars and light goods vehicles.
  • 7 August 2012: the requirements extended to new vehicle types in other relevant categories, including trucks and buses.

Describing the EU requirement simply as starting in 2012 misses the earlier passenger-car and light-van stage. These dates also concerned approval of new vehicle types, rather than a requirement for every existing vehicle to be retrofitted.

The European Commission identifies improved vehicle visibility as the purpose of DRLs. Their place in vehicle requirements reflects that safety function, even when manufacturers also use their shape as part of a vehicle's visual identity.

What Separates a Functional DRL from Decorative Lighting?

A light's shape or LED construction does not establish that it is suitable for use as a daytime running lamp. For replacement lamps or an aftermarket installation, the practical questions are:

  • Documented function: Is the lamp approved or otherwise documented for the intended DRL application in the destination market?
  • Correct light output: Does it provide the required visibility within the applicable intensity limits?
  • Installation: Are its position, orientation and visibility appropriate for the vehicle and applicable requirements?
  • Control behavior: Does it operate correctly with the headlights, position lamps and turn signals?

More brightness is not automatically better. A proper installation must balance daytime visibility with glare control and clear signaling.

Color also needs to be checked against the destination market. For example, the UK MOT inspection requirements specify white light for the DRLs covered by that inspection. An amber styling option should not be assumed to qualify as a permitted DRL in every market.

Why DRLs Cannot Replace Headlights

Daytime running lights do not provide sufficient road illumination for driving in darkness or bad weather. A bright instrument panel is also not reliable confirmation that the headlights and tail lights are operating.

When entering a tunnel, driving at night or encountering reduced visibility, use the appropriate headlights and other required lights for the conditions. Check the vehicle's lighting controls and follow local road rules.

Do not assume that illuminated front DRLs mean the rear of the vehicle is illuminated. Tail-light behavior depends on the vehicle's design and lighting mode.

Are LED strips automatically daytime running lights?

No. An LED strip's appearance does not verify its intended function, approval, output or installation suitability. Check the documentation for the exact product and application.

Why do some DRLs dim when other lights switch on?

Some combined lamps reduce their output to serve as position lamps when the headlights are on. A DRL may also dim or switch off near an active turn signal so the indicator remains clearly visible. The exact behavior depends on the approved lighting system.

Do older vehicles have to be retrofitted under the EU rollout?

The European Commission states that vehicles produced before the relevant requirements do not have to be retrofitted under that rollout. Any optional installation still needs to meet the applicable requirements.

Make Daytime Visibility the Priority

A well-designed DRL can contribute to a vehicle's appearance while performing a practical safety function. Its value comes from helping other road users recognize the vehicle's presence during daylight.

For drivers, that means keeping the lighting system functional and knowing when to use headlights. For distributors and installers, it means checking the exact lamp's documentation, vehicle compatibility and destination-market requirements before describing it as a road-use DRL. Styling can attract attention to a product; verified function is what supports its safety role.
